You need the RealAudio player to listen to these sounds, and a 28.8 modem or better to listen in real time. The documentation included with the RealPlayer explains
how to configure your browser to use RealPlayer to play RealAudio files.
The 'http' link is another method of listening to the files live, but it is not as slick as 'pnm'. You can't seek within the files as easily, and in some cases, you will end up having to download the whole file first before the RealPlayer will start playing the sound. You should only use the 'http' links if the 'pnm' isn't working cause we're too busy.
The 'ftp' links are for you to download the RealAudio files to your local disk and play at your leisure. This is a nice feature if you have a bad network connection and the sound breaks up alot. Also, for the 16k stereo (and other high bandwidth files) this is the only way to get the sounds. But, even if you have a 28.8 modem, you can download the 16k stereo files (it will take a *long* time, about 3-4 times the running time of the set) and play them later, even though your modem would be too slow to listen to them in real time. The trick is to figure out what filename corresponds to the set you want to download. Hold the mouse over the ftp link and the link that shows up has the filename at the end (something like ph12-31-97.ra)
To use the ftp links:
SugarMegs connection to the internet is a T1, which is capable of
handling about 60 pnm feeds, and that's it. We have to restrict the
number of ftp downloads occurring, so that the live feeds work. Only
10 ftp connections are allowed during the day, and 20 late at night
and on weekends, so it's *really* hard to get in direct to SugarMegs.
We do have several SugarMegs mirror sites that may be easier to ftp into. They have mostly the 16k high quality stuff that is in demand for people wanting to get.
All of the 5k mono entries are available via anonymous ftp
here.
All of the higher bandwidth entries (mostly 16k stereo) are available via anonymous ftp
here.
There is a daytime limit of 10 users.

Mpeg3's can be traded at this mirror site

You can add music to this collection over the net and help build an internet music archive! Did you know that you can encode an Ra file at home (for free) and play it locally without a server? | |
